A new Autonomous Underwater Vehicle navigating in the Panarea sea

Use of the latest technologies to combat climate change. This is done in the OGS ECCSEL NatLab-Italy laboratory in Panarea (Sicily, IT), a permanent infrastructure available to the national and international scientific community and public and private stakeholders interested in studies on climate change, CO2 sequestration and ocean acidification.

Thank you to the IPANEMA project, funded with €8.8 million from the PON - National Operational Programme for Research and Innovation 2014-2020 and the European Regional Development Fund, the lab now has an operational Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). The AUV can reach a depth of up to 3000 metres and provides data with higher resolution than conventional systems. It will make it possible to carry out integrated and high-tech monitoring of gas emissions, to study the impact of climate change on the marine ecosystem and the ecology of deep environments, but also to obtain data for characterising the seabed, giving a boost to Panarea Laboratories' activities.
