IPANEMA

Implementation of the ECCSEL natural laboratory and the marine observatory in Panarea

The IPANEMA project, funded by the PON - National Operational Program for Research and Innovation 2014-2020 with the granting of a loan for a total amount of € 8,786,920.18, provides for the implementation of the ECCSEL NatLab-Italy laboratory in Panarea with the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment, useful for determining and analyzing the main physical, chemical, geological and geophysical parameters, as well as for the acquisition of both traditional and innovative sampling and in situ analysis systems, working in continuous and synchronized mode . These instruments will allow multidisciplinary research in Panarea, a location part of a large quiescent submarine strato-volcano, characterized by active tectonic faults that form an extensive CO2-emitting fumarolic field, and which has therefore already been chosen by OGS to investigate the effects of increase of carbon dioxide on the biogeochemical and ecological functions of the marine ecosystem.

OBJECTIVES: IPANEMA aims at strengthening the pan-European infrastructure ERIC - ECCSEL (European Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage Laboratory Infrastructure) dedicated to the advancement of skills and knowledge in the field of applied geo-sciences and, in particular, of the natural laboratory ECCSEL NatLab-Italy in Panarea, an integral part of the Italian node of which the beneficiary OGS is the leader starting from the year 2018. Through this project, the ground office will be provided with new scientific laboratory instrumentation and highly innovative field for the purposes of sampling, in situ observation and data acquisition, so as to develop multidisciplinary studies in the field of physical, chemical, biological and geological sciences. Sensors at sea will be implemented with a new submarine observatory, both autonomous underwater vehicle - AUV and remotely operated vehicle - ROV, capable of reaching places difficult to access for common research vessels, providing new measures to be applied in research related to climate change, ocean observation, fisheries and habitat mapping, offshore aquaculture, marine archeology, deep environment ecology, as well as for environmental monitoring and ecosystem.

OGS is the proponent subject of the IPANEMA project (through its ECCSEL NatLab Italy laboratory in Panarea and CTMO as its Operating Units) with INGV, INFN and SZN as co-proponents.
