Trieste hosts workshop on the challenges of feeding the planet sustainably

Trieste is hosting the international workshop “Science and sustainable food. How scientific instruments can help food and biodiversity issues for the planet and its inhabitant health” on 22-23 February. The event aims to deepen knowledge on how scientific tools can help improve nutrition and biodiversity for the planet and the health of its inhabitants, while also considering the costs and opportunities of the ecological transition and the importance of using technology in a more ecological agriculture.

The meeting has been organised within the framework of the Trieste Laboratory on Quantitative Sustainability - TLQS, a project of the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics - OGS and the Trieste International Foundation - FIT thanks to the collaboration with the University of Udine and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, in partnership with the Business and professional women federation (BPW Italy - FIDAPA) and takes place at the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics - ICTP.

The workshop brings together scientists from different disciplines (genetics, applied genomics, microbiology, medicine, economics, agricultural technology, chemistry, communication) to promote a broader integration of methods across disciplines.

The aim is to shed light on the scientific and technological progress that could lead to plants and animals being able to make better use of environmental factors (such as water and fertilisers) and defend themselves better against pathogens, and to respond to the triple challenge of agriculture today: to produce more, consume less and improve the nutritional value of food. The event in Trieste is followed by a public meeting on 23 February at 5pm in the auditorium of the Science and Technology Library of the University of Udine.
