Bradyseism in the Campi Flegrei area

OGS fully shares and reiterates the clarifications issued by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) regarding the interpretations circulated in the media concerning a recent preliminary study on the evolution of bradyseism in the Campi Flegrei area.

As highlighted by INGV, the scientific work referred to is currently under review and does not constitute a deterministic forecast of the evolution of the phenomenon, nor a prediction of imminent seismic or volcanic events.

OGS emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between scientific research activities — aimed at developing and testing interpretative hypotheses on natural processes — and the official monitoring and risk assessment activities carried out by the competent authorities within the framework of the national civil protection system.

Understanding volcanic and seismic systems requires multidisciplinary analyses, long-term observations, and continuous international scientific discussion. In this context, preliminary studies and interpretative models are valuable tools for improving knowledge of geophysical processes, but they should not be interpreted as instruments capable of providing certain predictions of natural events.

OGS therefore invites the public and media to refer exclusively to the official communications issued by INGV and the Italian Civil Protection Department regarding the evolution of bradyseismic activity and seismicity in the Campi Flegrei area.
