CO2SITE launches: the new European project to study potential CO₂ storage sites across Europe

CO2SITE, the Horizon Europe-funded project aimed at developing an open-access digital atlas of potential CO₂ storage sites across Europe, has officially started to support the development of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) infrastructures.

Over the next three years, CO2SITE will collect and integrate technical, economic, and regulatory data on potential storage sites, providing an advanced tool to assess their feasibility, risks, and investment opportunities.

The atlas will include:

  • a detailed database of potential storage sites;
  • risk assessments and opportunity indicators;
  • tools to explore, compare, and rank sites based on user-defined criteria;
  • regional studies supporting the development of CCS clusters.

Building on more than 20 years of expertise and leveraging the results of the ongoing GSEU project (www.geologicalservice.eu), CO2SITE will strengthen the knowledge base needed for the strategic planning of CO₂ storage infrastructures, supporting developers, policymakers, and investors.

The project is coordinated by TNO, the Dutch independent organisation for applied research and technological innovation focused on sustainability.

OGS is a project partner and will contribute its scientific expertise in the field of geo-resources and geological CO₂ storage.
