Earthquakes: INGV and OGS Strengthen Monitoring of Seismic Phenomena through the National MEET Network
OGS has collaborated with the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), particularly its Palermo Section (INGV-PA), to expand the national hydrogeochemical monitoring network in seismic areas of Italy in the country’s northeast, as part of the PNRR-MEET (Monitoring Earth’s Evolution and Tectonics) project.
Specifically, four new permanent stations have been installed in Friuli to monitor hydrogeochemical parameters in areas considered strategically important for the study of seismogenic processes.
MEET is an infrastructure project that has contributed to strengthening INGV’s hydrogeochemical monitoring network, which is distributed across the entire national territory. As part of the project, 25 new permanent stations were installed throughout Italy to continuously measure water temperature, electrical conductivity, and water levels in wells and springs, in addition to the main meteorological parameters.
The infrastructure was designed with standardized data acquisition systems and shared IT protocols to ensure the long-term collection, storage, processing, and usability of data from each individual station.
