GNGTS returns to Friuli, 50 years after the 1976 earthquake
In 2026, fifty years after the earthquake that in 1976 marked the history of Friuli, the Italian scientific community returns to Udine to reflect on seismicity, risk, and the future of the planet. From 10 to 13 February 2026, the University of Udine will host the 44th National Conference of the National Group for Solid Earth Geophysics (GNGTS), the most important annual event in Italy dedicated to the geosciences, organized by OGS, the University of Udine, and the GNGTS Consortium.
A highly symbolic return: in a region shaped by the 1976 earthquake and which over the years has become a benchmark for seismic research and prevention, more than 400 geophysicists, seismologists, volcanologists, and engineers will come together to discuss the major challenges related to understanding natural phenomena and reducing disaster risk.
In particular, on 12 February the round table “Fifty years of lessons learned and expectations for the future for the GNGTS community” will take place, with the participation of:
-
Angelo Montanari – Rector of the University of Udine
-
Luca Zini – Councillor for Housing Policies for Social Housing, Spatial Planning, Private Building, Civil Protection, Staff Development and Organizational Well-being, Municipality of Udine
-
Riccardo Riccardi – Regional Councillor for Health, Social Policies and Disability, Delegate for Civil Protection of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia
-
Nicola Casagli – President of the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics - OGS
-
Giuliana Rossi – President of the GNGTS Consortium and Seismologist at the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS)
-
Dario Slejko – Former Research Director at the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics - OGS
-
Paola Pagliara – Department of Civil Protection
-
Massimiliano Moscatelli – Director of CNR-IGAG
