The OGS has developed a digital twin of the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Monrupino-Repentabor
At the Rocca di Monrupino, in the Province of Trieste, the experts of the OGS have recently created a 3D reconstruction of the local fortified complex, utilizing LiDAR UAV and SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) technologies. The latter is one of the most advanced techniques in the field of digital surveying and, combined with the use of a drone, it allows an extremely accurate mapping of an environment and its transformation into a detailed three-dimensional model - a true “digital twin” of the actual site.
Specialists from the Aerial Remote Sensing Facility (AiRS) of the OGS have scanned the ancient Sanctuary of Monrupino and the surrounding fortified area, providing a unique 3D reconstruction of the church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Assumption. The sacred building, dating back to 1512, stands on the ruins of a prehistoric hillfort and is one of the most significant sites in the Karst area of Trieste.
The results of the mapping were presented last Friday in the council chamber of the Monrupino/Repentabor City Hall, in the presence of representatives from the OGS and of the local Mayor, Tanja Kosmina.
The 3D reconstruction of the ancient fortified core of Monrupino will soon be available online, allowing scholars and enthusiasts to virtually explore every detail of the Rocca complex through an immersive, three-dimensional journey between indoor and outdoor spaces. This feature will also be particularly useful for visitors who are physically unable to visit the site.
The laser scanning operations were carried out in combination with the use of a state-of-the-art drone, equipped with a laser scanner capable of capturing 240,000 points per second and a built-in 20-megapixel camera.
The obtained measurements also constitute a valuable data set, which is expected to prove useful for future research, conservation, and enhancement of the site. The project underscores the commitment of the OGS to the preservation and promotion of historical and landscape heritage, with a strong focus on the outstanding features of both local, national and international scenarios.
