OGS takes part in the AWI-LAMEX Arctic expedition aboard the German icebreaker Polarstern
OGS researcher Renata G. Lucchi has departed from Tromsø, Norway, aboard the German icebreaker Polarstern to participate in the Arctic expedition of the LAMEX project, coordinated by the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI).
Renata G. Lucchi is participating in the expedition as a co-proponent of the LAMEX project and the only representative of Italian research on the team. The scientific objectives of the campaign focus on the study of past super-interglacials, with the aim of reconstructing Arctic climate history and improving our understanding of current and future climate change.
For approximately two months, until 14 October, an international team of researchers will carry out geophysical surveys and geological, oceanographic and cryospheric sampling, also with the aim of identifying new potential sites for scientific ocean drilling in the Arctic, as alternatives to those planned for the IODP ArcOP expedition, which was suspended in 2022 because of its location in Russian waters.
The expedition is coherent with OGS’s ongoing research in the field of international scientific ocean drilling and, in particular, the research activities developed through IODP Expedition 403 in 2024 and the AWARE project of the Italian Arctic Research Programme (PRA), both coordinated by Renata G. Lucchi.
