CARG Selinunte

Sheet 627

The CARG (Geological CARtography) Project is a national program launched in the late 1980s to create the official geological map of the entire Italian territory at a scale of 1:50,000. It is based on highly accurate surveys and a structured digital database. The project is coordinated by the Italian Geological Survey and involves regional governments, universities, the National Research Council (CNR), and other research institutions, including OGS.
This project provides a fundamental knowledge base on Italy's geological structure, both terrestrial and marine, including the creation of 3D geological models. It offers essential support for natural resource management, the analysis and prevention of hydrogeological risks (such as landslides and floods), and land-use planning in the most vulnerable areas, such as coastal zones. It is therefore a key tool for environmental prevention and protection, landscape conservation, soil management, and the reduction and mitigation of geological risks.
In summary, the CARG Project is crucial because it transforms geological knowledge into an operational tool indispensable for land safety, sustainable planning, and scientific research.
OGS has been entrusted, together with the University of Palermo, with the creation of the marine section of Sheet 627 Selinunte (southwestern Sicily). Marine geophysical data acquisition and sampling campaigns will be conducted to produce detailed thematic maps of the study area and 3D geological cross-sections.
