COMEDI

COpernicus Marine service with Enhanced Data assimilation and improved Interoperability

The COMEDI project will develop data assimilation methods to increase the accuracy and reliability of the operational and freely available modelling products in the European Copernicus Marine Service.

The Copernicus Marine products serve a diverse community of users and stakeholders, ranging from policymakers, shipping, navigation and offshore industries, fisheries, to coastal service. Part of these products are provided by modelling systems that simulate and predict the state of the physical ocean, of the marine biogeochemistry and of sea ice. The Copernicus Marine modelling systems integrate information from in situ observation networks and satellite sensors by using data assimilation (DA) methods.

The quality of the Copernicus Marine operational products is crucial, and this requires that the DA methods are state-of-the-art and can adapt easily to new observations that provide additional information.

COMEDI will develop advanced DA methodologies, allowing a better use of the observation information and consequently increasing the reliability of the Copernicus Marine products. Involving a broad consortium of DA experts, COMEDI will address the development of a modular interoperable tool, which will provide an efficient and sustainable approach to harmonise DA practices and enhance joint development in an operational framework.
