EMODnet Biology phase III (2017-2020)
Targeted Research. EMODnet Biology contributes to the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet), which is formed by a consortium of European institutes responsible for collecting marine data and metadata and preparing products based on various data sources. The main goal of EMODnet is to assemble fragmented and inaccessible marine data into a continuous, interoperable, and publicly available data flow, and to facilitate investments in sustainable activities both along the coast and offshore through improved access to standardized, harmonized, and quality-controlled information and data. EMODnet is an initiative of the European Commission, Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE), and is part of the Marine Knowledge 2020 strategy. EMODnet Biology aims to collect data on the spatial and temporal distribution of abundance and biomass of species from various taxonomic groups and is coordinated by VLIZ (Belgium).
