FUSE

Open Infrastructure on Future Underground Hydrogen Storage

The Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia plays a key role in Italy in launching the first transnational hydrogen valley in Europe as part of the flagship project North Adriatic Hydrogen Valley.

Complementing this initiative, OGS and the Universities of Trieste and Udine propose the innovative FUSE project, which will create the first integrate experimental infrastructure to identify and model potential underground hydrogen storage (UHS) sites and natural “white hydrogen” reservoirs. UHS will be crucial for the decarbonization of energy systems and the improvement of European energy security.

FUSE will employ advanced instrumentation to characterize rocks and the dynamic behavior of hydrogen in the subsurface, contributing to fundamental research, exploration, and the applied development of underground storage technologies, thereby supporting the energy transition and the growth of the hydrogen economy.
