IHOST

Imaging Underground Hydrogen Systems to shape future storage

The IHOST project (Imaging Underground Hydrogen Systems to shape future storage), proposed by the Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS), represents a new tool to support the cutting-edge research of the Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia (FVG) dedicated to the underground hydrogen storage component within the renewable hydrogen value chain.

IHOST builds synergistically on the recent FUSE project (Open Infrastructure on Future Underground Hydrogen Storage), funded in 2025 by the FVG Region, within a systemic approach aimed at enhancing and utilizing the new geophysical infrastructures currently being acquired for underground hydrogen storage research.

IHOST will recruit and train two Early Career Researchers dedicated to the project. These new researchers will focus their activities on testing and integrating—both in the laboratory and in the field—the new suite of instrumentation and software acquired through FUSE. During the project, they will acquire advanced skills in geophysics and modeling, enabling them to develop next-generation research in the field of underground hydrogen storage.
