Manuela Bordiga

My research focuses on the complex interactions among marine biota, climate changes and ocean carbon cycle at different time scales. Specifically, I am a specialist of a calcifying phytoplanktonic group, the Coccolithophores, that plays a key role in the permanent sequestration of carbon from the system. My research is based on a multidisciplinary approach that combines the study of the fossil record with experiments on monospecific lab cultures of phytoplankton, together with biogeochemical analyses. The final aim is to deepen our understanding of the current climate change and to implement/innovate the strategies towards the atmospheric carbon dioxide decrease and sequestration.
