Installation of Six Temporary Seismo-Geodetic Stations Completed on the Island of Panarea

The installation of six temporary seismo-geodetic stations on the island of Panarea has been successfully completed. The network was developed within the framework of the PNRR ECCSELLENT project. Each station is fully autonomous and integrates a seismometer, GNSS equipment, a photovoltaic power system with backup batteries, and an LTE data transmission unit.
This infrastructure represents the first operational core of the new multidisciplinary network that OGS is developing in the Sicilian archipelago, called AEON – Aeolian Earth Observing Network.

Why Panarea?
The island hosts one of Italy’s most important natural laboratories dedicated to the study of processes related to CCUS (CO₂ Capture, Transport, Utilisation and Storage), developed through the national projects ECCSEL – NatLab Italy, IPANEMA, IPANEMA HR, and PNRR ECCSELLENT.

OGS’s Role in ECCSEL
OGS is the representing entity of the ECCSEL European Research Infrastructure Consortium on behalf of the Ministry of Universities and Research and coordinates the Italian National Node of the infrastructure. The new AEON network will help strengthen ECCSEL activities by providing seismo-geodetic data acquired in a unique and strategically important natural setting.

This initiative reinforces OGS’s commitment to European research infrastructures and supports the advancement of CCUS studies, a key topic for the energy transition and climate change mitigation.
