OGS and INGV sign a new framework agreement to strengthen collaboration in the field of Earth and Marine Sciences

The National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics – OGS and the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology – INGV have signed a new framework agreement in Rome today for scientific collaboration and activities of mutual interest. This will consolidate and further develop cooperation between the two research bodies in the fields of Earth and Marine Sciences, Applied Geophysics, Seismology and Seismology applied to engineering.

The agreement, signed by OGS President Nicola Casagli and INGV President Fabio Florindo, renews and strengthens the decades-long collaboration between the two organisations, which was formalised in 2011 and is acknowledged as strategic for national scientific research and for the Italian Civil Protection system.

The new protocol has a duration of five years and calls for the promotion of joint research and development initiatives, the exchange of scientific data, the enhancement of research results, and the implementation of shared projects for the understanding and mitigation of natural risks, particularly seismic and geological ones.

A special joint committee has also been established to ensure effective coordination of activities, direct joint actions and promote technical round tables dedicated to specific topics.

"This agreement consolidates a long-standing and crucial collaboration for the understanding and safety of our national territory, bringing together scientific expertise and fundamental strategic infrastructure", stated Nicola Casagli, President of OGS.

This agreement is part of the activities that see both organisations as centres of expertise for the Civil Protection Department and as partners in European research infrastructures such as EPOS (European Plate Observing System) and EMSO (European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water-column Observatory).
