The OGS engages in key global events: the One Ocean Science Congress, the Third United Nations Ocean Conference, and the B2B meeting ONE HEALTH: Well-Being and Sustainability in the Blue Economy

In recent weeks, the OGS has participated in two globally significant events, both held in Nice, France, and entirely dedicated to the future of the oceans: the One Ocean Science Congress (OOSC) and the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3).

The OOSC, a special event under the umbrella of UNOC3, focused on ocean-applied science and provided a valuable forum for dialogue between the scientific community, civil society, and policy-makers. Its aim was to offer an in-depth scientific perspective on the marine environment and to propose concrete solutions for the sustainable management and protection of the ocean.

Meanwhile, UNOC3, a joint initiative promoted by France and Costa Rica, focused on the implementation of urgent actions for the conservation and sustainable utilisation of the oceans and their resources, in accordance with Sustainable Development Goal 14. This event can be regarded as the most significant global gathering dedicated to marine environmental protection, with participants encompassing representatives of governments, United Nations bodies, intergovernmental organisations, international financial institutions, non-governmental organisations, members of the scientific community, representatives from the private sector, philanthropic foundations, local communities, and Indigenous peoples.

Representing OGS on various occasions were Cosimo Solidoro, Director of the Section of Oceanography; Alessandra Giorgetti, Deputy Director of the Section of Oceanography and Head of the National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC); Mounir Ghribi, Director of International Cooperation and Research Promotion (ICAP) at the Institute; and Angelo Camerlenghi, Senior Researcher in the Section of Geophysics.

During UNOC3, Cosimo Solidoro and Alessandra Giorgetti constituted part of the official Italian national delegation in attendance at the event.

Alessandra Giorgetti was responsible for delivering a presentation on behalf of OGS, in which she provided a detailed overview of the work of the NODC and the EMODnet Chemistry project. She participated in the round table Regional services as a building block of ocean data sharing, which was organised by the Decade Ocean Data Sharing Coordination Office and the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet).

In the context of the OOSC, Alessandra Giorgetti also presented the poster EMODnet : an EU data service that provides FAIR, integrated marine data for the global ocean data ecosystem, and she delivered a talk on EMODnet as the EU data platform for marine litter data. Additionally, she co-chaired the session Plastic pollution: impacts, fate, and innovations, alongside Professor Daoji Li of Shanghai (China).

Mounir Ghribi represented the OGS at the international event ONE HEALTH: Well-Being and Sustainability in the Blue Economy, a business-to-business satellite initiative of UNOC3 that was hosted by IMREDD - the Mediterranean Institute for Risk, Environment and Sustainable Development of the Université Côte d'Azur in Nice. The event was conceived with the objective of fostering enhanced collaboration between France, Monaco and Italy in the field of the blue economy.

In the week leading up to UNOC3, ECORD – the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling – held a side event focused on ocean scientific drilling at the Institut de la Mer de Villefranche (IMEV), near Nice. A total of 100+ delegates, scientists and stakeholders from multiple countries, met in person and online to share knowledge, perspectives and commitments regarding the future of sub-seafloor research.

The OGS was represented at this event by Angelo Camerlenghi, in his capacity as event Chair and Chair of ESSAC (the Science Support & Advisory Committee of ECORD).

The involvement of our Institute in these high-level meetings serves to reinforce its long-established role as a prominent national and international authority within the domains of oceanographic science and marine data management. Through its active engagement, the OGS provides invaluable expertise, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and a strategic vision that contributes significantly to global initiatives focused on safeguarding the marine environment.
