Scientific Cooperation in the Mediterranean: A Memorandum of Understanding Signed Between OGS and Xjenza Malta

This morning, OGS and Xjenza Malta - the Maltese government agency responsible for promoting and coordinating scientific research, technological innovation, and science communication - signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to consolidate collaboration between the two institutions in the fields of research, innovation, and scientific training in the Mediterranean region.

The agreement was signed in Malta by the President of OGS, Nicola Casagli, and the CEO of Xjenza Malta, Silvio Scerri, at the Esplora Planetarium Hall. The event was attended by institutional representatives, including Malta’s Minister for Justice, Research, and Innovation, Clifton Grima, and the Italian Ambassador to Malta, Valentina Setta. This MoU represents a major step forward within a partnership already active through numerous European and Mediterranean initiatives, including JPI Oceans, the 5+5 Dialogue, BlueMissionMed, the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership, the ONE Water Alliance, and Horizon Europe activities.

The signing of the MoU coincided with the official opening of the AMARE-MED 2026 Summer School, which is dedicated to advanced multispecies modeling approaches for an ecosystem-based management of Mediterranean marine resources.

As stated by President Casagli during the event, the agreement represents a significant milestone in strengthening scientific cooperation in the Mediterranean. The collaboration between OGS and Xjenza Malta will help promote joint research activities, training and skills development, access to research infrastructures, and new opportunities within European and international programs, thanks to investments in research, science, and innovation aimed at ensuring a more sustainable future for the Mediterranean Sea.
