The second OGS training event under the MARCOPOLIS project was held in Rome on 27 May
The training events organised by OGS as part of the MARCOPOLIS project are continuing. MARCOPOLIS is developed within the framework of the Copernicus Academy and dedicated to the use of Copernicus Marine Service products for coastal monitoring.
Specifically, on 27 May 2026, the second event in the training series focused on marine eutrophication — a phenomenon caused by an excessive input of nutrients that disrupts the balance of aquatic ecosystems — was held in Rome at the Cavour Conference Centre.
During the meeting, attended by representatives of the Regional Environmental Protection Agencies and the National Environmental Protection System, Copernicus Marine Service products relevant to the monitoring of the phenomenon were presented, alongside practical exercises focusing on strategies for the visualisation and analysis of physical and biogeochemical marine data.
Through specific case studies, participants were able to deepen their understanding of monitoring processes and of the indicators of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) for Italian waters. They also gained hands-on experience with three key Earth observation tools: MyOcean Pro for rapid, visual exploration of marine data; QGIS for data integration and analysis in a GIS environment; and Python for advanced processing and workflow automation.
MARCOPOLIS falls under the remit of the Copernicus Marine Service National Collaboration Programme (NCP) which seeks to enhance knowledge and expertise in the use of next-generation Earth observation products. The project is coordinated by OGS, in collaboration with IUSS, CICA, CMCC and ISPRA.
