ICSC
Italian Research Center on HPC, Big Data, and Quantum Computing
The National Centre for HPC, Big Data and Quantum Computing, established and managed by the ICSC Foundation, pursues two main objectives:
-
to create a centralized national computing infrastructure capable of storing large volumes of both structured and unstructured data, integrating existing and new resources in High Performance Computing (HPC), High Throughput Computing (HTC), Big Data, and network technologies, while also providing scientific and industrial communities with a flexible and unified cloud interface;
-
to foster the development of a globally attractive ecosystem around this infrastructure, supporting academia and industry and promoting the effective use of computational resources as well as the advancement of new computing technologies.
The National Centre represents a key opportunity for the national scientific, industrial, and economic system to address current and future scientific and societal challenges by strengthening and expanding existing skills and infrastructural assets.
The National Centre includes a cross spoke, Spoke 0 – Supercomputing Cloud Infrastructure, and 10 thematic spokes: Spoke 1 – Future HPC & Big Data, Spoke 2 – Fundamental Research & Space Economy, Spoke 3 – Astrophysics & Cosmos Observations, Spoke 4 – Earth & Climate, Spoke 5 – Environment & Natural Disasters, Spoke 6 – Multiscale Modelling & Engineering Applications, Spoke 7 – Materials & Molecular Sciences, Spoke 8 – In Silico Medicine & Omics Data, Spoke 9 – Digital Society & Smart Cities, Spoke 10 – Quantum Computing.
OGS is one of the founding members of the hub and contributes to Spoke 4 – Earth & Climate and Spoke 5 – Environment & Natural Disasters, with activities focused on high-performance modelling and data processing.
