JRU EMSO Italia

Joint Research Unit “European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water column Observatory” Italia

EMSO Italy is the national node of the European EMSO ERIC infrastructure, dedicated to the long-term, real-time monitoring of ocean processes. Its mission is to deepen our understanding of key marine phenomena such as dense water formation, biogeochemical cycles, climate change, geohazards, and ecosystem dynamics.

It operates permanent marine observatories equipped with advanced instrumentation to collect physical, chemical, biological, and geological data from the water column and seafloor. EMSO Italy also coordinates a network of national research institutions—including INGV, CNR, and OGS—and promotes open data access to support scientific research and the sustainable management of marine resources.

In Italy, EMSO oversees regional infrastructures in strategic locations of the southern Adriatic, with OGS serving as the regional team leader. This includes the E2M3A observatory (managed by OGS), a key site for studying deep water ventilation and biogeochemical dynamics, and the BB-FF observatories on the continental slope (managed by CNR-ISP), which monitor water mass movements as well as sediment and nutrient transport.
