Within the PNRR ECCSELLENT project (Development of ECCSEL-R.I. Italian facilities), OGS is developing a seismo-geodetic network on the island of Panarea, home of the ECCSEL NatLab Italy natural laboratory. The network, consisting of seismometric and GNSS stations, is designed to monitor phenomena related to natural CO₂ emissions and represents a key infrastructure for assessing the environmental risks associated with geological CO₂ storage.
Activities already carried out:
- Network design and site selection for installations.
- Preparation of technical specifications for instrumentation and materials.
- Procurement and testing of seismic and GNSS equipment.
- Delivery of auxiliary materials (solar panels, electrical cabinets, etc.).
- Signing of agreements with landowners for station installations.
- Initiation of authorization procedures with local authorities.
- Setup of a test micro-network at the OGS CRS in Udine.
This initiative strengthens Italian infrastructures within the European research framework ECCSEL ERIC, enhancing Italy’s role in the development of advanced technologies for CO₂ capture, utilization, transport, and storage (CCUS).
