Climate change alters the distribution, diversity and composition of benthic species communities in the Mediterranean Sea. Some of the resulting effects include a reduction in distribution areas, migration, habitat fragmentation and the risk of extinction. The potential damage to food webs and key marine processes is severe

progetto Bridges

From 29 December 2025 to 7 January 2026, the new oceanographic campaign of the research vessel R/V Gaia Blu of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) will take place, with the aim of identifying the remains of the ancient landmass that once connected south-eastern Sicily with the island of Malta and the island of Gozo.

An international study, led by the University of Trieste and OGS, has unveiled a sophisticated digestive system in the jellyfish Cotylorhiza tuberculata, with specialised channels and distinct pores for ingestion and expulsion of food. The findings of the study were published in the scientific journal PLOS One.

Changes in the geographic distribution of Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa affect the communities hosted by these two species.

saildrone

Using state-of-the-art instruments such as Saildrones, the research was led by OGS in collaboration with CNR-ISMAR, CNR-IAS, Ca’ Foscari University, and other European institutes. It provided new insights into the variability of air–sea CO₂ exchanges in the eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean
